Work From the Symptom, Not the Part

Almost every opener call starts with the same sentence: the garage door opener is broken. It usually is not. The opener is one of four things that can produce the symptom you are seeing, and the others are the remotes, the safety sensors and the door itself. Sorting them out takes a few minutes and no tools.

Do it in order and press the button once at a time. Repeated attempts against a stuck door are how tracks get bent and gears get stripped, which turns a small repair into a larger one.

Nothing Happens At All

No lights, no sound, no click. Check whether the garage lights work, because an opener is usually plugged into a ceiling receptacle on the same circuit. A tripped breaker, a receptacle knocked loose or a plug pulled out during a clear-out are all more common than a dead motor.

If there is power but still no response from anything, including the wall console, the logic board in the motor head is a likely suspect. In this climate that is worth taking seriously rather than dismissing, because boards and capacitors do fail in garages that run hot for months.

The Motor Runs but the Door Stays Still

You hear the motor working and nothing moves. On a chain or belt opener this often means the trolley has become disconnected from the door arm, either because the release cord was pulled or because the trolley itself has broken. Look along the rail: if the carriage travels the length of the rail while the door sits there, that is your answer.

The other common cause is a stripped drive gear inside the motor head, which usually comes with a grinding or whirring sound. Both are repairable, and neither means the whole unit has to go.

The Door Reverses Before It Closes

This is the most frequent opener complaint and the least likely to be the opener. Two safety sensors sit a few inches off the floor on either side of the opening, and the door will not close if the beam between them is broken or the units are not aimed at each other.

Look at the indicator lights on both sensors. One steady and one off or flickering means alignment or wiring. Check for a bin, a bicycle wheel, a coiled hose or a ridge of dust along the floor first, then look at whether a bracket has been knocked or has drifted. Never disable or bypass the sensors to force the door shut; they are the reason a closing door stops when something is underneath it.

If both lights are steady and the door still reverses, the close force or travel limit may need adjusting, or the door may be binding in its track. That is where the checking stops and a technician takes over.

Remotes and Keypads

If the wall control works and the remotes do not, the problem is on the remote side. Change the batteries first. If that does not help, look at the antenna wire hanging from the motor head, which should hang freely rather than being coiled or taped up, and consider whether a new LED light fixture or smart device in the garage might be interfering with the receiver.

An outdoor keypad that has stopped working often just needs a fresh battery and a re-paired code. Heat and sun degrade keypad buttons and seals faster here than in milder places, so a keypad that has been baking on a west-facing wall for years may simply be worn out.

When the Opener Is Not the Problem

Before replacing an opener, the door itself should be balanced. Disconnect the trolley with the door fully closed, lift the door by hand to waist height and let go. A balanced door will stay roughly where you left it. If it drops or shoots up, the springs are out and the opener has been compensating.
